Designer Spotlight: Jen Alonso

Some people find design, and for others, design finds them. For Charleston Design Studio Manager Jen Alonso, it’s always been a part of life. From childhood afternoons spent reimagining rooms to leading a design team, Jen has turned her natural creativity into a career helping homeowners bring their unique stories to life.

How did you get into home design?

I think interior design found me before I even knew what to call it. Growing up, I’d come home to a living room that looked completely different than it did that morning. My mom was always rearranging, reimagining and making our house feel brand new. I was completely fascinated. I started sketching spaces, moving furniture, and eventually designing anything I could, from rooms to graphics. Looking back, those early days of trial and error were the start of something I’d grow to love: telling stories through design.

Outside of design, what are your other hobbies and interests?

I love to travel, hang out with my family and try new things whenever I can. For me, it’s all about making memories, having fun and enjoying whatever comes my way.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Inspiration finds me everywhere; it’s those little details that catch my eye and refuse to let go. Whether it’s a quirky pattern, a perfect texture, or a surprising color combo, I’m always on the lookout for the sparks that turn a space from ordinary to unforgettable.

What is your favorite Ashton Woods Collection® and why?

It’s difficult to choose, but the Artisan and Rosemary design styles have completely stolen my heart. I’m a fall girl through and through; give me rich textures, warm tones, and cozy layers any day.

What is your favorite Ashton Woods model home and why?

There are so many stunning models to choose from, it’s almost impossible to pick just one! To make it a little easier, I’m narrowing it down to Charleston. Even then, two homes have totally stolen my heart.

First up is the Sullivan model in Stratton by the Sound. It’s elegant, coastal, and full of charm that resonates with this historic town.

Then there’s the Monroe model in Watson Hill. With its mix of neutral and bold design moments, it has some truly unforgettable details. Both homes capture a style and vibe that really speak to me. It was love at first walk-through!

Which room in a home is your favorite to design? Why?

My most inspiring ideas always seem to come alive in the heart of the home. Those cozy, communal spaces where life really happens. I’m all about kitchens and family rooms. They’re where laughter echoes, snacks disappear and the best memories are made. It’s where family gathers, stories are told and creativity just flows. Honestly, they’re my happy place.

How would you describe your own personal style?

Is “clean, casual, cozy” an official style? If not, I’m making it one! I’m all about spaces that feel lived-in but effortlessly inviting; the kind of home that wraps you up the second you walk in. I love layering textures and keeping the palette neutral, letting bold moments shine through paint, trim, and textiles. It’s cozy with a side of character.

What design advice do you have for buyers as they build their new home?

As someone who’s always finding new inspiration, I tell buyers to design for who they are now but leave space for who they’re becoming. Great design should flex, grow and evolve with you.

What are one or two key tips you’d give homeowners for decorating their new space after move-in day?

It’s tempting to want everything picture-perfect the moment you move in, but the magic happens when you give yourself time to settle in. Let the house reveal how it really wants to be lived in. That way, the pieces you choose and invest in will be the ones you truly love, not just the ones that fill a space fast.

What does The Heart of Design™ mean to you?

To me, The Heart of Design™ isn’t just about how a space looks, it’s about how it feels. It’s the way a room welcomes you in, tells your story, and holds your everyday moments. It’s about creating spaces that are lived in, loved on, and layered with meaning. Design isn’t just style: it’s soul, comfort and connection all wrapped into one beautiful, functional space.
